Vale SA has signed a protocol of intentions to invest USD 5.27 billion in the key mining state of Minas Gerais. According to a Vale statement, the investment will be made in developing a new iron ore mine and two ore processing units.

BUTTING China in collaboration with BUTTING Anlagenbau in Schwedt has constructed and delivered several large vessels and pipes for the retention period in a bio-diesel plant. With a diameter of more than 5m and more than 18m high, the so-called “Big Bertha” is the largest vessel delivered to this bio-diesel plant in Hong Kong.

The West Australian (WA) government will spend AUD 3.5 million developing Anketell, 30km east of Karratha, as the Pilbara's new deep water iron ore port and industrial precinct. The WA government will spend AUD 3.5 million over the next three years preparing an industrial precinct development agreement for the project.

A local unit of Rio Tinto has been given a mining permit for a nickel project in Indonesia worth USD 2 billion. The long-awaited permit is the first to be issued under a new Indonesian mining law passed in 2008 and could help increase certainty and lift flagging investments in the country's mining sector.
